University of Cape Town · Department of Medicine

Every clinician meets moments where the right answer isn’t obvious — consent, capacity, competing duties. This course sharpens how you reason through them, so you decide with clarity and defend your reasoning with confidence.

About this course

Reason well when it matters most

Good clinical ethics isn’t about memorising rules — it’s a skill: seeing the real question, weighing principles that pull in different directions, and explaining your decision so colleagues, patients and committees can follow it. Most of us were never taught that skill explicitly.

Over five focused, one-hour lessons, UCT’s faculty take you through a practical method for thinking clearly under pressure — from consent and capacity to confidentiality and competing duties. It’s discussion-led and built around the everyday dilemmas of practice, not abstract theory. You’ll leave able to structure an argument, spot a weak one, and stand behind your call.

What you’ll be able to do

By the end of this course

  • Identify the real ethical question inside a messy clinical situation.
  • Structure a clear argument and recognise a weak or fallacious one.
  • Weigh competing principles when they genuinely conflict.
  • Handle consent and capacity conversations with confidence.
  • Navigate confidentiality, disclosure and competing duties.
  • Make a defensible decision under pressure — and explain it.
